Voting commences - Indigenous Voice to Parliament Referendum
Tiwi Islands Bathurst Island residents became some of the first people in Australia to vote in the upcoming Referendum with the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) beginning Remote Voting Services on 25 September 2023. Attention turned to Tiwi as the AEC Commissioner Tom Rogers and AEC NT Director Geoffrey Bloom visited the Wurrumiyanga Polling Place to take the opportunity to showcase the work of the AEC and their Remote Voting Services teams. Reporters from national broadcasters ABC and NITV cam to the Islands to capture the historic moments.
Some of our local Tiwi residents signed up to work the Polling Places, to provide translation services and Elector and voting assistance.
AEC and local staff remained in Wurrumiyanga for the week, where local people came to vote 'Yes' or 'No' to an Indigenous Voice to Parliament.
The AEC Remote Voting Services team will Pirlangimpi, Milikapiti, Ranku, Warruwi and Minjilang across week beginning 2 October 2023.
